Stesichorus (632-556 BC), the founder of the greek choral lyric poetry, was born in Himera. This city was destroyed in 408 BC by the Carthaginians; the surviving inhabitants were permitted to settle in the neighbourhood and called their new home town Thermae Himerenses. Stesichorus's proper name was Teisias, "Stesichoros" being a nickname refering to his profession, namely master of choirs.
